I dug up the reply that David sent on the old commline mantis mailing list back in 2000.

Also if you listen to the Creative Armada podcast David mentions the Oberheim Expander was their main synth before the Viruses/Nords.

I use a fender squier super sonic/epiphone les paul thru a line 6 amp Drew uses an ESP eclipse thru a peavey 5150 hed and marshall 4/12 cabinet jeff uses an ESP eclipse, and a gibson les paul standard thru a peavey 5150 head and marshall 4/12 cabinet.

we have various backups gtrs (epiphone les pauls, and a weird 1 pickup no pikguard fender strat)

drew and jeffs guitars pass thru a access virus synth before going to the amp for filterchanging and auto-muting

and everyone has Hush pedals (basically a noise gate)

the sequencer controls when the gtrs are on and off. they are off automatically for tuning after every song (just in case) and the signal sometimes turns off and on quickly sort of like a djs cut switch

the answer to your question about the tremelo effect is the on/offf effect i already described. the sequencing settup we use is mpc2000 and the sampler is a kurzweil k2000

Body: i will make it simple. synths are as follows. fruity loops with juno 60, wasp, and various weird proprietary hacker made pluggings. takamine acoustic guitars, fender p-bass, slingerland drums, acid-soundforge by sonic foundry, les paul guitars, and then metropolitan studios is where i cut. they have ssl, full tdm pro-tools, a g5, and every old compresser, limiter, pre-amp, channle strip, 48 analog tracks on 2" otari, every expensive mic, and every amp you'd likely find in lenny kravitz studio, or on led zepplin 2, or a jimi hendrix record. the SSL has 72 channels, and theres every lexicon, eventide, and other outboard processors. every available pro-tools pluggin, distressors, and a 5 million dollar facillity with the best live room and iso booth ive ever used. the end. and then theres me playin all the stuff and singing, and walt engineering and mixing, both of us producing.

Body: Jeff turzo made all of the music for dont know how to be. But i know what he did it with. and it doent appear anywhere else on the record, trust me.It was made on an oberheim obmx, and an oberheim expander. None of the sounds we ever used were factory presets, so anything you heard was made from a begining unprocessed waveform. good luck.

i dont understand the last half of the first part (everthing after fender p-bass lol) but that is so cool. you guys just gave me so much to look up, im pumped up right now. im compling all info i get to post up into my site too, god forbid everyone forgets or loses their emails or whatnot.

Acid Soundforge - Primarily for working with loops and arranging them
Les Paul Guitars - A model of Gibson guitars - That raunchy guitar sound

compressor - the most misunderstood and misused device in the audio world, i will try to give example. lets say you got a song where the singer does the whisper during the verse and scream during the courses. (Beautiful people by Marilyn Manson) ok so think about this, everytime he goes hard on the mic you would need to pull the volume down or he would be too loud in the mix right? Well with a compressor it takes that range and makes it smaller. So now you let the compressor do the work. that is the simplest thing I can think of, it is really used much more than that in alot of things. Ever notice how a song on the radio sounds different than on CD. It is becuase the signal is heavily compressed. Too much compression and it sounds like a cassette getting chewed up in the old days
limiter - simply put it modifies the input signal so that the output signal does no exceed specified level
channel strip - on the mixing console it is on ofthe strips, like channel one, this is probably for the analog tracks
48 analog tracks on 2" otari - hmmmmmm 2' tape machine for multitracking.

well if anyone bothered to look at the comments on DRs myspace page comments on the songs that he did it shows that he used sony acid pro 4 and 5 so there have at it and why isnt there more info on this cool cat online you look at yahoo and see jeff did this and that but what about work the David did well whatever take careggg

f me i meant lyrics and it was quite some time ago whatever but i do remember that it was sony acid pro 4 and 5 cause i downloaded a demo but it was fake if anyone wants to make good ish try propellerheads Rebirth and Reason and pr native instruments stuff have at it take careggg

yeah i looked at the ID3 tag of one of the mp3's and it said "made with sounic foundry acid" or something. I figure he was using it to arrange some of the tracks for demo purposes but it is easy really easy and good for arrangment if you have your stuff lopped out already.

I try, I believe that music should be accessible to all. The tools are there and now I found some more free ones. I posted on my website the way I do tracks, the layout and tools I use to make is easier for newbies and for friends.

You see my view is this, everyone should be able to make music, some people can actually play and some people will just use loops, theyare technically arrangers but that is totally ok also. If everyone can do music then it pushes some of us to be on our toes and really come up with good stuff, instead of sitting back and being comfortable.

Also with computers it is possible to do crazy things like acoustic breakbeat songs or adding dixie jazz horns over breakbeats. I know that is not original but a little unorthodox. So that is why I offer to show people stuff.

I think whether its original or not its really not about that but about creativity..... Thats the key to make music.... Sometimes at first it might sux but after a while of getting use to it you can make really good music..... I have some old school demos of Beck and they kind of suck and they were boring at times.... But look at him now.... MOthaf*cker can create some good sh*t now.....

I like Beck, his stuff his funny.

That last album is really good.
