2005 A year spent mostly in the studio
Category: Music
As some of you may have noticed, I've gone missing from the rock & roll artist scene for quite a while. Right after the last Year of the Rabbit tour in the Fall of 2004, supporting APC, I pretty much hung up my traveling boots and hunkered down in the studio.
Here's some of what I've been up to: Produced and mixed the latest Mae LP, The Everglow, mixed the new Abandoned Pools, and the forthcoming Bullets & Octane (produced by one of my heroes, Page Hamilton of Helmet), and I'm in the middle of recording and mixing the soundtrack for the new Jared Hess film, Nacho Libre, starring Jack Black, with music by Beck. Also, I got married to my longtime girlfriend Charlotte Martin. I produced and mixed 2 EPs by her, Darkest Hour, and Veins, and a forthcoming LP entitled Stromata.
I have kept my own stuff going though. I'm 5 songs into a new solo album, one of the songs "Up or Down" is streaming right here on myspace.kenandrews. But my latest pride and joy is a new project I'm spearheading called, Los Angeles Digital noise Academy, or LADNA for short. I got the idea for this while attending an art show featuring the work of the Royal Art Lodge of Winnipeg Canada. Their collaborative style of art making inspired me to construct what amounts to an internet based musical collective. A, Postal Service on steroids, if you will. It is still in its infancy, but we already have a handful of songs completed, one of which is streaming on the LADNA myspace site (http://www.myspace.com/losangelesdigitalnoiseacademy) right now. The way it works is this. Someone uploads a musical idea, maybe a bass line, maybe some lyrics, maybe a guitar riff, or some piano chords. They put this in the "initial ideas" folder. From there all the other members peruse this folder, listening for something that strikes their fancy. When they do, they download it, add some form of musical idea to it, then re-upload it into the "in progress" folder. This process continues until a song is complete. I have about 30 people signed up, with about 15 or so having actual contributed. I'm not going to list all the members until we get a bit further down the line. But look for a complete album sometime this year.
So this does it for my first ever kenandrews blog post. I apologize to everyone for not updating www.kenandrews.com more often. Maybe this is a way I can be more current with everyone. Thanks for listening and check back for updates.
-Ken
