scans of David and Jeff's pre-GLU band's albums...

Post by Jawa242 »

I was contacted by someone who used to be friends with David and Jeff in highschool, she has since moved to England but she actually STILL HAS the original copies, with artwork, of David/Jeff's old bands. She was nice enough to take time out and scan them for me so they can be used on the book's myspace page AND allowed them to be shared with you guys. So enjoy a walk down the road of pre-GLU days, some of these are hard to see but I couldnt get the real size of the scans on the forum:

Image
a band that David was in where he was ONLY the drummer

Image
the actual cassette tape for this band

Image
the 3rd Killing The Barrowbird album, yes there were 3 albums (it was a trilogy of sorts)

Image
the tape for the 3rd KtB album

Image
this was the 2nd Killing The Barrowbird album

Image
the inside information on the 2nd KtB album

Image
another band that david was in with jeff before GLU

Image
the credits for the band One Picture Of Love

Image
and of course the A Sheet Of Metal insert

There is NOT any artwork or insert for the 1st Killing The Barrowbird album, the Tuesday Parade album however there is a front cover to the Kan Do Kill "single" and I have seen it in person at Gretchen's house but I dont believe there is a scan of it anywhere. Maybe I can talk her into scanning it and sending it to me.

audio

Audio, what about audio. I see a tape there you should ask her about the audio. Although I'm sure you already have. So what's the news?

I have a handful of those "albums" burnt to cd, and the others she is trying to transfer from tape to cd and will mail those to me when she's done. Unfort I have been asked by David's family to not release any of the tracks on those albums...

curiosity...

Post by Drine »

Just out of curiosity, were you given a reason why. I understand you could never do that simply out of respect for them and David. But my logic would be that David had put that material out there at one time expecting people to hear it, what would be the difference now?

Don't fault me for asking...

it is a request straight from his family, so I have to honor their request about it. They were nice enough to give me a copy of all these "albums" under that 1 stipulation that they don't go "public", I was so excited to get these tracks that I agreed and never really probed the why

as a musician, i imagine it's because he grew.

for example, i'm not a very good musician, but i would much prefer people to hear my recent stuff, rather than the basement demos from when i was younger. that person isn't me, and i am sure that those songs don't reflect who he became.

I see that the copyright would fall under those who produced the music, since it was a home recording. The permission to copy doesn't fall exclusively under David's family, probably moreso for those other bandmates still living. For Barrowbirds, copyrights would fall under the executors of his estate, which I presume is his family.

Frankly, David was never hyper critical of his work, he seemed to be happy with the creation process, not so much the result. I can respect his family's wishes, however I don't understand them. Hell, I wish I still had copies of the artwork he putzed about with for his self-release, and the single Keep Dreaming. It does in fact feature a certain young lady some of us are familiar with.

Good god. He was calling his studio work "Mind Recordings" even way back THEN. That's amazing.

The copy on that second Barrowbirds tape is priceless. I love the lengthy description of the tools used to mix it, and the whole "please disregard the address" and etc bit. I think it's hilarious that David's self-deprecating humor was on display even at that early point.

Also:

"Songs About the Lord"?

"Sea of Understanding"?

There might be something there hinting at what was to come.

Thanks for posting those.
