God Loves Underwater review/tribute article

Post by Twowaymonologues »

I'll be posting this either tonight or tomorrow at twowaymonologues.blogspot.com and eventually on twowaymonologues.com once my designer gets done the transfer.

I'm not a longtime God Lives Underwater fan but I did have some experience with them in the mid to late 90's. I heard about David's death the other day and decided to do a write up on Life In The So-Called Space Age both to review the bands significance, but also to bring light to the loss that others may never have found out about.

I'm scoring it just like I would any other album and so be prepared it will be scored as I view it and I won't take into bias the context of the time when the review is being done. I really must say reading these boards, and seeing how many passionate fans this band had is impressive. And that will make it into my review.

Feel free to leave any comments on the corresponding thread with the post. Hopefully I do it some justice.

Thanks,

Dan

No i'm doing Life In The So Called Space Age because that is the album I have the most familiarity with.

A buddy of mine who bought like 2 albums a year for some reason fell in love with these guys and bought that album. If he didn't, there is a good chance to date I still would only know "From Your Mouth".

Is the newer album stronger? I did want to review one of their strongest albums, but this was just the one I chose.

*whew* thank GOODNESS i just asked you that...

hehe. UOTF is their last album. it was just released last year too. megaforce kinda messeed up the sound quality a tad, but i just bought it and put it into my car stereo system and it kicked @ss to me..

have you ever heard empty? that was their major label debut. UOTF is a heavier version of that crossed with LITSCSA (life in the so called...) and OMG it is amazing... like EVERYONE on this board has the demo versions too if you'd liek to hear those...AND the unreleased material too.

HEY!! SOMEBODY SEND THIS GUY THE INFO FOR THE GMAIL ACCT.
(the g-mail account is a shared email address this whole community usees to upload and archive songs we want to share with other people in the glu forums) ask meet-cees or unshure88 - pm one of those guys

also DAVID REILLY just released the INSIDE EP, his solo stuff last year... and plus some demos of the major label debut he was SUPPOSED TO RELEASE and tour on, coming up next year...
http://www.myspace.com/cprdavidreilly.

wait for that page to load and you can hear the song on the little myspace player that loads on the page.

wow and theres alot of his friends who still visit the glu board...i bet they can send you some material too.

i got some bootlegs but my internet connection continues to defy me. otherwise i'd send it to you.

my god man, you need to get UOTF and listen to it like 1,000x before you review it...its SUUUUCH an emotional experience...esp when you sing along the lyrics...its like it all reverberates in you...i cant explain it...you have to just try it out... :)

here' a link to place to buy the cd...if you cant find it in your store... the official versions to me are the best but the demos are incredibly amazing too.

ill post it up in a second

Yeah i kinda made a few efforts to find the more recent album and had no luck whatsoever.

What i'm wanting to do is get the review up soon but i'll look into this. Rather than writing a newsy story I figured i'd review an album and talk about the career you know?

Anyhow, if you want to take the time to do the article and write the review of the latest album rather than me I'd be willing to give ya the gig. Nothing too extensive checking the link in the original post will give you an idea of typical length.

I have started but have much to do on the review so let me know if you are interested. Msn - randomrantingsandravings@Hotmail.com / email dwolovick@gmail.com

The songs on the myspace site are very good. I didn't even realize the first track looped like three times and it didn't bother me in the least.

I'm starting to feel under-qualified for the review but i'm doing it anyhow. Just needa keep it in perspective, not nearly as hardcore or informed as this board is. If that solo album ever comes out i'll definitely review that as well.

I'll keep you informed.

I do like the album more and more with each listen. I remember having a tough time getting into it back in 1998. Was listening to way worse music then, and had nowhere near as open of a mind to new sounds. That said, this is still significantly different than what I normally hear. Is it me or does a lot of this stuff from 1998 still sound ahead of the time a bit even in 2005?

I really do think GLU was ahead of their time. in 98 the radio waves were flooded with backstreet boys and ska bands galore, for a brief second. I saw the music video for "From Your Mouth", and I immediately went out and bought it, that first week I had it, I listened to it constantly, even the thirty minutes of noise at the end of the disc, I was big into drugs back then and this "soundtrack to my life" perfectly described how I felt, from the sometimes unclear lyrics, which to me described how sometimes I would say something yet, no one would listen. To these amazing electronic noises, which would send my inebriated brain into loop de loops and barrel rolls, all while I laid down staring at the ceiling taking breath after breath, allowing all of this into my psyche, and listening to my heart beat with the beat in the final 30 minutes, before I knew it, I had laid through the entire 74 odd minutes, and after that, my life had completely changed. Now I ramble.

Yeah I remember From Your Mouth being so much different than anything else you would see on the charts at that time. Everybody seemed to like it, yet all the people who liked it weren't listening to anything that sounded remotely like it.

But as much as that was different, once you heard the rest of the album that was when it really became apparent.

Yeah, the closest thing I had to God Lives, was Depeche Mode's Violator, but other than that I listened to stuff like...the Counting Crows...and Oasis.
I really can't wait to read your review man.

I had an epiphany tonight while I was talking to people on here and feeling a lot of the passion so many people have towards the band.

Originally my gameplan was to write a straight shooting review of the album. And score it however i would any other new album, highlighting the good, and the bad etc. Now... I just don't feel like that is the right way to approach this.

So the review is going to shoot off into a kinda article. Anyhow i'm about to work on it once the gf goes to bed. Might post tonight.

i cant #### believe this. I never ever try to post a review of any sort without first coping it and pasting it somewhere in case blogger freaks out.

But i just did.... after finishing it i just wanted to get it up on the blog and now of course blogger is freaking out.

if i lost this im gonna be pissed... it never sounds as good the second time out.
