I bought GHOSTS the day it came out as a download through nin.com... I think it accomplished exactly what Trent said it was supposed to do; its meant for background music while you are doing things, in an interview he even said it is supposed to be a "soundtrack to making dinner", which I thought was very endearing... I have put it on while on a long drive and even though NIN is my favorite band (they have been since 1992), I found that by the start of Ghosts IV, listening to it as an "album" while doing nothing else isnt really the best way to obsorb it...
now for my THE SLIP review after the first listen:
the song if I had to put only 1 song from the album on a mix CD for someone: HEAD DOWN
the song that actually made me cry: LIGHTS IN THE SKY
the song has has the best lyrics: ECHOPLEX
the best song from a musician's standpoint: DEMON SEED
if I could change 1 thing about the album: CORONA RADIATA would be track #10
best song on the album from a NIN fan standpoint: HEAD DOWN
also, (and anyone who has read my book got a little synposis about my fandom with NIN), if I had to list the NIN albums in order of my favorites, it would go like this (keep in mind, I did NOT include Ghosts on this list for reasons listed above):
1. The Fragile
2. Broken
3. Year Zero
4. The Downward Spiral
5. Pretty Hate Machine
6. With Teeth
7. The Slip
so there you have it... and my favorite NIN song of all time, ever is "Ruiner" and I honestly dont think that will ever change, lol

thanks luke, i appreciate it.
jawa, decent review, although i'm surprised "Letting You" wasn't mentioned. ,y favorite on the record. i would rate MY personal NIN favorites like this (not including ghosts, as you did)
1. The Downward Spiral (my all time favorite record)
2. Broken
3. With Teeth
4. The Slip
5. Year Zero
6. The Fragile
7. Pretty Hate Machine
i think, if remix e.p.s were allowed, Further Down the Spiral would have easily taken the #3 slot.
